This weekend, seventeen intrepid track cyclists from five South Central Collegiate Cycling Conference (SCCCC) schools endured the brutal 105 degree heat at the Frisco, TX Superdrome to compete in the second of three SCCCC track weekends. The Texas A&M team hosted Saturday’s racing at the impeccably maintained 250 meter facility on the Preston Ridge Campus of Collin College. The events included Points races at distances of 15k and 10k, Unknown Distance, Miss and Out, and an exhibition Italian Pursuit race that didn’t count toward individual or team point totals.
Texas A&M’s Shane Haga dominated the Men’s A with decisive wins in all three points-earning races, most notably the Miss and Out, where he rapidly closed on UT’s Kyle Johnson in the final lap to secure the win. UT’s Mathew Sides strengthened his grip on the Men’s B, dominating all three races on the night. The manageable size of the Men’s B and Women’s fields allowed for the combining of those two groups, which resulted in many, if not most of the women dishing out plenty of hurt on the men in those combined races. U of H’s ubiquitous Afton Shelton won the Women’s field, followed by Loren Eggenschwiler of Midwestern State, Nicole Brady from A&M, and Gabriela Ruiz from UT.
Italian Pursuit, a race where one woman rounds out a team with three men, topped off the night’s racing with Texas A&M’s “A” Team seamlessly knocking out a kilometer in 1:12:42.
Track conference championships will take place at the Alkek Velodrome at Katy, TX on Friday and Saturday, August 12 and 13. Please contact Carlton Mathis for more info.
